On July 18th, 1969, Constable Len Shakespeare (26) was shot and killed by career criminal Clifford Wicket Lurvey while Wicket was escaping arrest.

The trial was held between March 9th - 12th, 1970 in the Court of Queen's Bench with Judge F.M. Bastin residing. Lurvey was found guilty with a recommendation of mercy from the jury. An execution date of October 7, 1970 was fixed.

An Order of Court on December 23, 1970 resulted in Lurvey's death sentence being commuted to life imprisonment at the Stony Mountain Pententiary.

Lurvey died in 1978 at the age of 60.
