In the early morning of September 6, 2009, in the area of Young Street and Portage Avenue, 17-year-old, Michael Jok, and a 21-year-old friend were walking in the area with a few friends. They were with three young women and on their way to a friend's Young Street apartment.

They were approached by a vehicle and the occupants started hollering at the women. An argument broke out, turned violent, and ended with the two young men being stabbed and the vehicle fleeing the scene. It was reported in the media that Jok recieved a fatal wound to his neck.

Police were called to the scene at 5:20am. The two were rushed to hospital, but Jok died from his injuries. Michael, was a Grade 12 Miles Macdonnel student from Sudan. His, 21-year-old friend was treated and released.

A few days later, on September 12th, police charged, 34-year-old, Abiola Akintunde Matthews with 2nd-Degree-Murder and attempted murder.
